Sally H Alexander – Watercolour Artist
Hello, I’m Sally and I am based in the lovely village of Ingleton, where I live with my husband, daughter & a pooch named Luna. Living on the edge of the stunning Yorkshire Dales, and bordering the Lake District, there is certainly no shortage of inspiration.
I have always loved drawing and creating, and from a very young age, I would always be found with a pencil or paintbrush in hand. I went on to study graphic design and art at Art College, but in my 30s, I began to focus on fine art painting, particularly portraits.
I sell original art, often landscapes and subjects typical of my local area, but my real passion is portrait commissions. With every painting, I create an accurate likeness while working hard to maintain each subject’s unique character.
My particular focus within portraiture lies in exploring how the eyes draw the viewer in, allowing us to understand the subject in greater depth and capture an idea of a person or what they stand for.
I specialise in watercolours, and in October 2023, I attended a watercolour painting retreat just outside Florence in Italy, where I discovered a new style of painting portraits using Aquabord™ – an acid-free textured clay surface that absorbs watercolours like a fine paper. Colours retain their purity and vibrancy in a way that even the finest of watercolour papers can never match. As such, it is perfect for portraits and has become my surface of choice.
The boards are protected with a wax finish meaning they can be displayed without glass which gives them a unique look.
